Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managinga Building Information Model through the use of three-dimensional, intelligentdesign information. BIM is driving the commercial construction industry awayfrom a 2D-based process toward a model-based process that encourages acrossthe-board collaboration from owners, designers, general contractors and all thespecialty contractors with the goal of delivering safer, more productive projects ontime and within budget with a final building that offers a sustainable environmentfor its users. The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America’s 27,000 membersnationwide are dedicated to advancing the ever-changing agenda of commercialconstruction contractors, improving jobsite safety, expanding the use of cuttingedgetechnologies and techniques and strengthening the dialogue betweencontractors and owners. All these goals are furthered by the AGC BIM EducationProgram (BIM EP) and the corresponding Certificate of Management — BuildingInformation Modeling (CM-BIM) credential. An Introduction to Building Information Modeling is the first of four courses thatcomprise AGC’s BIM EP. This full-day, facilitator-led course provides participantsa complete overview of BIM concepts, terminology and practice as well as anintroduction to important uses and concepts to help them understand how BIM ischanging the construction process. The course is divided into four sessions:Session 1 focuses on explaining common terms and answering the question “Whatis BIM?” This session also addresses why BIM should be used on constructionprojects and describes the potential benefits that can be realized by designers, contractors, subcontractors, vendors and owners when BIM is used on a project.Session 2 examines the process that a company typically goes through to startincorporating BIM into its business practices. This session looks at how technologyis helping to facilitate the elimination of work silos, discusses the advantages of theBIM process and shares some of the workflow processes associated with BIM.Session 3 introduces participants to more advanced uses of BIM, following thetypical progression a company goes through in its BIM implementation plan. Thissession examines case studies of 4D and 5D BIM and discusses new topics that areimpacting BIM today.Session 4 is where all the BIM concepts come together and participants startthinking about the next steps. This session describes the four options for BIM implementation. The course concludes with participants developing a Company BIM Assessment that they can take back to their organization.
